For students in the Achieve Program, joining the MetroWest YMCA was about much more than physical activity—it was about finding a community that empowers all. The YMCA's inclusive culture and annual events like the 5K Treadmill Turkey Trot shows how Achieve students have found a place where they can reach their full potential.

Achieve and the YMCA: A Community of Support

As part of Natick Public Schools, the Achieve Program serves individuals aged 18-22 with disabilities and offers ongoing instruction in vocational skills, independent living, and post-high school planning. Since joining the Y in 2018, students in the program have been welcomed into an inclusive community that helps them thrive.

Erin Harris, Achieve Program Teacher, noted, “The staff assists our students with equipment, provides friendly interactions, and helps them feel a sense of belonging in their community.” This environment fosters connections between students, Y members, and staff.

“Everyone deserves a place where they feel welcome, safe, and supported,” Erin continued. “When our students leave the program at 22, they will have familiarity with the MetroWest Y. If they enjoy being members, this is a place that they are already connected to, and they can continue their workouts on familiar equipment with familiar faces.”

Turkey Trot: Setting Goals and Building Confidence

An event like the 5K Treadmill Turkey Trot reinforces that sense of belonging. Achieve came back for this year’s event with enthusiasm and determination.

Students like Aleysha, who completed her first-ever 5K, shared, “I felt stronger after participating. My goal was to stay on one piece of cardio equipment for 30 minutes. It was hard, but my teachers helped me. I will be participating in next year’s Turkey Trot!” Other students like Mia, Brian, and Faisal proudly met their goals and had a fun time cheering each other on.

To ensure that every student completed their 5K, Achieve collaborated closely with Y staff to make adjustments based on different needs. These proactive efforts created an environment where students felt empowered to pursue and achieve their goals, reinforcing the belief that with the right support, success is within reach for everyone.

With two years of Turkey Trots behind them, this annual event has become an Achieve tradition that aligns with their November Step Challenge—the perfect combination for everyone to stay active during the colder months and shorter days. Their participation is also a powerful representation of community and personal growth. With new goals in mind for 2025, students continue to build stamina, confidence, and skills that equip them for life beyond the program.
